Cort G290 Modern | Review

Cort have quietly built a reputation for producing high-spec instruments that punch well above their price point, and the G290 Modern continues that trend. Designed as a contemporary take on the classic S-style guitar, it blends boutique-style features—roasted maple, stainless steel frets, locking tuners and premium pickups—into a performance-focused instrument that feels far more expensive than it is. With its modern hardware, versatile pickup configuration and ergonomic design, the G290 Modern aims squarely at players who need a guitar that can comfortably move between clean, articulate tones and high-gain lead work.

Overview

At first glance, the G290 Modern looks like a refined take on a familiar formula. It features a poplar body paired with a roasted maple bolt-on neck and fingerboard, giving the instrument a bright, responsive character and a modern aesthetic. The compound-radius fingerboard (12"–15.75") and stainless steel frets are clear indicators that this guitar is built with contemporary players in mind, allowing easy chording in lower positions and smoother bends higher up the neck.

Electronics come in an HSS configuration, with a Seymour Duncan TB-4 humbucker in the bridge and two Cort Voiced Tone VTS-63 single coils in the neck and middle positions. This setup gives the guitar impressive versatility, covering everything from crisp clean tones to powerful high-gain sounds.

Hardware includes Cort’s CFA-III two-point tremolo system, staggered locking tuners, and a Graph Tech Black TUSQ nut—components chosen to maximise tuning stability and sustain while keeping the instrument gig-ready straight out of the box.

Pickup Clarity and Tonal Versatility

One of the standout aspects of the G290 Modern is the clarity of its pickups. The Seymour Duncan TB-4 bridge humbucker delivers exactly what you would expect: punchy output with excellent note definition. Under gain, chords retain separation and single-note lines cut through the mix easily, making it a strong option for rock and modern lead playing.

Switch to the neck and middle pickups and the tonal palette changes dramatically. The Cort VTS-63 single coils provide crisp articulation and a balanced top end that works beautifully for clean or lightly driven tones. They offer a sparkling response that suits funk rhythms, pop parts, or glassy Strat-style textures.

The five-way selector allows for the familiar range of S-style combinations, and with the push-pull coil split on the tone control you can access even more tonal variation from the bridge pickup. In practice, this means the G290 Modern can move from tight rock rhythm tones to articulate clean passages without needing pedal or amp adjustments.

A Neck Built for Comfort

The neck is another highlight. Cort’s Ergo-V profile is slim and comfortable, offering a natural feel whether you are playing rhythm chords or navigating fast lead passages. The roasted maple construction not only adds visual appeal but also improves stability and responsiveness, giving the neck a lively snap and consistent feel. Combined with the compound-radius fretboard, the neck feels particularly accommodating for modern players. Lower positions remain comfortable for chords, while the flatter upper register makes bends and legato runs effortless. The satin finish on the back of the neck also deserves mention—it keeps the feel smooth and fast without becoming sticky during longer playing sessions or sweaty live performance environments.

Tremolo System and Tuning Stability

Modern tremolo systems live or die by their tuning stability, and Cort’s CFA-III two-point tremolo performs impressively in this regard. Built with steel saddles, a solid steel block and a steel baseplate, the design promotes sustain and a strong fundamental tone while allowing smooth pitch modulation. In practical use, the tremolo feels responsive and predictable. Subtle vibrato effects and moderate dive-bombs can be used without significant tuning drift.

The stability is helped significantly by the guitar’s supporting hardware. The staggered locking tuners eliminate string slippage, while the Graph Tech Black TUSQ nut ensures smooth string movement across the nut slots.

Together, these elements create a tremolo system that is genuinely gig-ready—something that can’t always be said for guitars in this price range.

Playability and Build Quality

The G290 Modern feels like an instrument designed by people who understand working guitarists. The stainless steel frets provide durability and smooth bending, while the luminous side dots are a thoughtful addition for players performing on darker stages. The overall build quality is excellent. Fit and finish are clean, the hardware feels robust, and the guitar maintains a balanced weight that sits comfortably whether standing or seated.

Verdict

The Cort G290 Modern is an impressive example of what a modern performance guitar can be when thoughtful design meets solid value. Its combination of clear, versatile pickups, an exceptionally comfortable neck, and a stable tremolo system makes it suitable for a wide range of musical styles. Players looking for a reliable, gig-ready S-style guitar with modern features will find a lot to like here. The G290 Modern manages to deliver boutique-level appointments—roasted maple, stainless frets, Seymour Duncan pickups—without the boutique price tag.

For guitarists who demand clarity, comfort and tuning stability in equal measure, the G290 Modern stands out as one of the strongest contenders in its class.
