There's a moment every guitarist knows well, you're traveling somewhere or staying somewhere new, you've got an hour to kill, and your guitar is sitting at home. For too long, the answer was either a cheap, plasticky travel guitar that felt like a toy, or the faff of lugging a separate amp, guitar, and cables just to nip through a few scales. The Donner HUSH X Live may be a viable solution!
At £399.99, this is a boldly conceived all-in-one instrument that packs a full-scale electric guitar, a detachable 5-watt speaker, amp modelling, onboard effects, and Bluetooth connectivity into a single, surprisingly portable package. It's a lot to promise. So does it deliver?
The HUSH X Live is a headless electric guitar built around a neck-through construction using a seven-piece mahogany and maple laminate neck, which runs the full length of the body. It's a method more commonly associated with boutique instruments, and it pays dividends here in terms of tuning stability and sustain. The body itself is Okoume mahogany finished in satin, and while it won't be mistaken for a high-end boutique axe, it feels solid, well-put-together, and distinctly unfussy. Available in black or white, it's a clean-looking instrument, purposeful rather than flashy.
The slim, standard C-shaped neck sports a satin finish covering a 25.5" scale length, 22 rounded stainless steel frets plus a zero fret. For a guitar at this price, that's an impressive spec sheet. The stainless frets in particular are a welcome touch — they're harder-wearing than nickel and have a noticeably smooth feel under the fingers. They certainly add a level of quality to the playing feel of this instrument.
Donner has fitted the HUSH X Live with their own HUSH X '23 Original Alnico V pickups in an HS configuration — a single coil at the neck and a humbucker at the bridge. The result is a versatile tonal palette: the neck pickup offers brightness and clarity well-suited to clean playing, while the bridge humbucker brings the thickness needed for crunch and higher-gain work. A standard volume/tone control and three-way pickup switch keep things intuitive and accessible.
This is where the HUSH X Live earns its name. Clipped to the lower bout of the guitar is a 5-watt speaker module that simply detaches when you want it to. Snap it on and you're ready to play anywhere — hotel room, park bench, backstage warm-up — without a single additional piece of gear. It's genuinely clever engineering, and it works.
The speaker itself is no audiophile marvel, but that's beside the point. At bedroom volumes it produces a clear, usable sound that's more than adequate for practice. More importantly, the module houses the guitar's onboard processing: five amp and cabinet simulations covering clean, blues, rock, and high-gain territory, alongside modulation, delay, reverb, and a noise gate. Controls for volume, gain, tone, amp selection, and a tap tempo for the time-based effects are all built into the speaker unit. It's straightforward to use — beginners won't find themselves lost in menus — and the range of sounds on offer is genuinely impressive for an all-in-one device at this price.
When you don't need the built-in speaker, the guitar's standard 1/4" output lets you plug into any external amp or audio interface as normal. The speaker module, meanwhile, can also be used independently with other electric guitars via its own input jack — a neat bonus.
Bluetooth connectivity rounds out the package, allowing you to stream backing tracks directly from your phone or tablet to the speaker for play-along practice. Paired with the included accessories — gig bag, strap, cable, clip tuner, picks, and wrenches — you have everything you need straight out of the box.
The Donner HUSH X Live is a genuinely useful guitar rather than a gimmick. It won't replace your main stage instrument, and experienced players may find the amp simulations a touch limited for serious studio work. But that's not who this is for. For a beginner looking for a complete, hassle-free setup without buying separate pieces of gear, or for a seasoned player who wants to practice on the road without compromise, it's an outstanding solution at a fair price.
Donner has thought carefully about who needs this guitar and built it accordingly. At under £400 for everything included, the HUSH X Live is one of the more compelling all-in-one propositions on the market right now.
