Ibanez AAD51CE Advanced Acoustic | Review

The Ibanez AAD51CE is part of the company’s Advanced Acoustic series, designed to offer a modernised take on the traditional dreadnought format. Its defining feature is the Grand Dreadnought body shape, which is slightly larger than a standard design, intended to increase volume and low-end presence.

The top is constructed from solid Sitka spruce, paired with sapele back and sides. This combination is widely used, delivering a balanced tonal profile with clear highs and a controlled midrange. The X-M bracing system is designed to enhance projection and dynamic response, aiming to provide clarity across both strummed and fingerstyle playing.

A notable addition is the A.I.R. port, positioned on the upper side of the body. This feature directs sound toward the player, improving on-stage monitoring without relying solely on external amplification. While subtle, it does contribute to a more immediate perception of the instrument’s output during performance.

The neck uses an okoume construction with a low oval grip, prioritising comfort and accessibility. The profile is relatively slim, making it approachable for a wide range of players. A purpleheart fretboard and bridge complete the specification, providing durability and a slightly brighter tonal emphasis.

Electronics are handled by an Ibanez T-bar undersaddle pickup paired with the AEQ-TP2 preamp, which includes onboard EQ and a tuner. The system offers straightforward functionality, with both XLR and standard jack outputs available, increasing flexibility in live or recording situations.

In use, the AAD51CE delivers a clear and direct acoustic voice, with a noticeable emphasis on projection. The extended body size contributes to a fuller low end, though it remains controlled rather than overly resonant. The instrument responds well to a range of playing dynamics, maintaining clarity under heavier strumming.

Build quality is consistent with its price range, with clean finishing and reliable hardware. It does not aim to compete with high-end acoustic instruments in terms of tonal complexity, but it provides a dependable and predictable response.

Overall, the AAD51CE is a practical, modern acoustic-electric that incorporates a number of thoughtful design elements. It is well suited to live performance and general use, offering a balanced combination of projection, playability, and functional electronics.
