Mooer F40i Li | Review

Like many guitarists, my first exposure to Mooer was through their line of mini pedals. Specifically, their absolutely excellent range of Preamp Pedals. These terribly useful little devices emulate the sound of legendary tube amplifiers ranging from ‘60s classics to modern high gain monsters, and they showcase Mooer’s pedigree when it comes to amp modelling.

This same amp modelling prowess is at the core of their “Intelligent Amps”, like the F40Li we’re looking at today. This tiny powerhouse packs a 40w punch into a practice amp sized package, and offers plenty of volume for jamming or busking. It comes pre-loaded with a suite of tones for every occasion, from singing leads to shimmering ambient cleans - all of which are controllable via Mooer’s iAMP app.

Using just your smartphone, you can edit your signal chain, tweak parameters on your virtual amp/pedals to your heart’s content, as well as organise and recall all of your presets. This is also where the “intelligent” moniker comes from, because this amp is powered by Mooer’s proprietary AI technology.

Via Mooer AI, you can ask for any tone you can dream up, and the AI will provide you with a selection of signal chains that are perfect for the job at hand. It’s like having an AI guitar tech in your pocket. The tones it dialled for me when I asked for “Cliffs Of Dover” and “Master Of Puppets” were great starting points to tweak from, and as the technology matures I have no doubt it will become more and more accurate.

The F40Li also sports a host of practice and jamming tools, including a drum machine and a looper along with a lithium battery that means you don’t need to be near a power source to play away to your heart’s content,

The Mooer F40Li is a great solution for any guitarist looking for a wide range of tones with zero fuss - and let’s be honest, that’s all of us isn’t it?
