Mooer GE150 Max | Review

The world of guitar multi-FX is seemingly dominated by a few big players - usually with commensurately big price tags. But dig a little deeper and you’ll find a wealth of offerings from a host of great brands that rival the big boys in many ways. First among these is OG “Chinese disruptor” brand, Mooer.

The GE150 Max takes their excellent GE150 Plus and adds another row of footswitches for maximum live playing flexibility and control. Yet somehow, despite offering all this and an expression pedal, it remains surprisingly compact and requires only 300mA of 9v power from a standard BOSS-style power supply - meaning it can integrate with your existing pedalboard, or replace it entirely.

While it has a fixed signal path, meaning no complex routing or dual-amp setups, but considering how few players will actually make use of these features, it’s a worthwhile trade-off considering the combination of price and tones the GE150 Max offers.

The tones are a mixed bag, and not every effect algorithm is a winner, but the GE150 Max excels where it counts - the amp and cab tones. These feel great to play, with a sound that’s pretty comparable to units costing 10x the price. There are also very convincing effects available for every slot, with some great choices for reverb, delays and modulation.

In terms of workflow, the GE150 Max is slanted heavily towards players who prefer using presets. The menu system can be a little confusing to use in a hurry, but there’s plenty of options for getting your tone exactly how you want it. Once you get your presets dialled in, using it live is a breeze.

In addition to the suite of tones offered by the GE150 Max, there’s a fully equipped set of practice tools too. Under the “Groove Station”, you’ll find an 80-second looper, a metronome and a drum machine with patterns for a whole range of styles. This section is a real standout, and eclipses the “big 4” modellers in terms of features.

The Mooer GE150 Max is a perfect choice for both guitarists who are new to modellers, and for players on a budget who need high-end killer tones that won’t break the bank.
