If you’re like most people, you probably associate Mooer’s GTRS guitars with the excellent “intelligent guitars” they produce - the ones with an entire guitar signal chain built right into the guitar itself. These all-singing-all-dancing instruments have impressed use here at GI with both their innovative internals and the astounding quality of the guitars themselves, especially given their very affordable price point!

WIth guitars like the MMT100 FR, Mooer are answering the question “what if I could just take the guitar without all the fancy circuitry?”. The result is an exceptionally well made instrument for less than some of us pay for an overdrive pedal - and it even comes with a gig bag!

One of the more aggressive models in the GTRS range, the MMT100 FR is a pointy-horned superstrat design with a pair of Mooer-designed humbuckers and a Floyd Rose Special tremolo system. Finished in a flip-flop “Aurora Purple” paint and with an ECG-inspired inlay, it’s pretty clear that this guitar has it’s sights set firmly on fans of a certain Japanese guitar brand. But does the performance match the visuals?

In a word, yes. The MMT100 FR is an absolute shred machine, with a lightning-fast roasted maple neck and 24 flawless frets atop a rosewood fretboard. The neck profile is slim, but not “Wizard thin”, and has a relatively conservative 12” radius - plenty flat enough for a very low action, but still offering some concession to more traditional playing styles.

The Mooer-designed humbuckers are well balanced and noise-free, with a tone that’s punchy and even, but perhaps not the most characterful. In truth though, if you’re going to be running this guitar through dense walls of distortion, you’ll likely be perfectly satisfied with how they sound - and besides, everyone has their own favourite set of humbuckers that you’ll likely want to drop into this guitar anyway. Perhaps the only let-down here is the coil split tones, which are pretty weak and thin, and come courtesy of a toggle switch rather than a more elegant push-pull. Myself, I’d prefer to see a partial split here for a more robust coil split tone, but again, that’s an easy mod to perform should you choose to.

The star of the show is undoubtedly the Floyd Rose Special though - a welcome addition to the GTRS line. It’s good to see that Mooer have resisted the urge to use a knock-off tremolo here and stuck with the OGs, and while the “Special” may not be Floyd Rose’s most luxurious bridge, it’s performance on dives, scoops and gargles is exemplary.

The MMT100 FR is an excellent guitar for very little outlay. You’re unlikely to be taking it to your weekend blues gig, but if you’re a metal guitarist on a budget, this guitar will do you proud.
