Washburn Americana Series B9 5-String Resonator Banjo

By Guitar Interactive Magazine

This is a well-built, easy-playing, student-grade banjo that sounds a lot better than its price point might suggest. Its mahogany neck is fitted with an adjustable truss-rod and a rosewood fingerboard. A cast 11” aluminium pot, mahogany resonator, Remo banjo head, chrome armrest and traditional style tailpiece round out the package. The only really jarring note comes from the headstock’s guitar-style tuners, which clash visually with the conventional geared 5th string tuner.

The out-of-the-box set-up is actually quite good, and a quick once-over by someone who knows how to set up a banjo would get the best out of this one.

Although this Washburn B9 banjo makes a reasonably good attempt at the classic Bluegrass sound, it seems more suited to being played in old-timey frailing and fingerpicking styles.

Although you might not think so from all the jokes about them, banjos are quite sensitive instruments - especially when it comes to being carried around - so it would be worth investing in a decent-quality gig-bag to avoid any mishaps on its travels.
